Each year, there are several destinations that become the "must visit." And 2012 is no different. Here are our picks for the Top 4 Travel Hot Spots of 2012.

Wales
With 641 castles, three national parks, 750 miles of coastline and one very happy royal couple, Wales (size of Massachusetts) is must see this year. Lonely Planet put Wales as the #1 place to visit this year, and it also made the New York Times list of place to visit in 2012? So, what makes 2012 so special for Wales? 
* In May, the Welsh Government will open the Wales Coastal Path. This will make Wales the only country in the world you can walk all of the coast.
Wales will host the first 2012 Olympic event, a ladies soccer game at the Millennium Stadium.  
* Great place for families w/excellent food, great farm shops, great festivals (mud festival, beer festival, Snorkeling Championships, Man Vs Horse Race) = great way to meet the Welsh people.  * Wales is one of the greenest countries in the World.
What to do there? Kayak, mountain climbing, visit copper mine, fishing, cliff diving, mountain biking, opera, rugby, dolphin watching, drive a steam train or ride the “best wooden rollercoaster in the world” with an 80 ft drop. 

Cuba
With the travel ban, Cuba was never a travel option for most Americans. However, with the loosened travel ban, religious organizations and institutions of higher learning can now sponsor trips to Cuba. And as more travel companies get licenses to run guided trips, we should see opportunities to travel to Cuba grow immensely in 2012.

Cuba enjoys a unique cultural history, nice climate, beaches, colonial architecture and attracts over 2 million people a year as tourism is one of the main sources of revenue. In the past two years, the number of Americans visiting Cuba has doubled, and we can expect even more as major airlines increase flights.

For this year, travel to Cuba will most likely remain restricted to guided groups, which means basically it will stay relatively expensive. But for travelers who want a “new” destination that's close by, put Cuba on your list.

South Korea
Now is a great time to visit Korea as two major events geared toward international travelers occur in 2012. The World Expo, which will be held May-August, will host more than 50 countries. Featured attractions will include a giant pipe organ that visitors can play using their smartphones and the Extreme Climate Experience, which has a simulated Antarctic blizzard.

And their in value in traveling to Korea now as well. The country is in the last of its three-year-long Visit Korea Year campaign, a promotion that brings greater access and better prices to foreign visitors with special rates on trains, free bus service to popular cities and attractions, and special "international taxis," whose drivers speak English. There are also dozens of fourth-night-free promotions, as well as the massive Korea Grand Sale 2012, which features discounted shopping until the end of February.

The Netherlands
Three huge events make The Netherlands a “must visit” in 2012. The country blooms its way through the duration of Floriade, the once-a-decade horticultural expo running from April to October 2012. Visitors can explore more than 160 acres of carefully crafted nature divided into five themed zones where they can witness the splendor of more than a million tulips, bid on flowers at a simulated flower auction, or arrange a floral masterpiece. Plants won't be the only cultivated offering: there are also 900 dance, music, theater, and other performances staged during the six-month expo.

Winter heats up starting in January with the Holland Dance Festival, a three-week series of more than 70 performances, 100 interactive workshops, and a massive dance parade. March 16 marks the opening of the 25th TEFAF art and antique fair. The event draws serious art buyers, but it's also a great way for noncollectors to get a glimpse at exceptional artworks not on the museum circuit.

“Cancun is a great get away, especially with a group of friends,” Vandy said. “There are plenty of things to do wether it is enjoying the night life or relaxing at the spa.”

Night Out: Girls Bachelorette Party Getaway to Cancun

Upon requesting a dinner restaurant in town (there are 350 to choose from), the resort concierge recommended we try Harry’s Prime Steakhouse and Raw Bar. We started with a round of cocktails....Coconut Martini, Mango Martinis and a Margarita on the Rocks. The drinks were delicioso, sp we knew we were in for a treat. This was an amazing dining experience....everything from the Crab Wontons to the New York Strip to the Mahi to the Macaroni & Cheese was amazing! And just when we thought we couldn’t eat one more bite, they brought a huge, blue cotton candy display for the center of our table. After taking ridiculous photos with the Marge Simpson hair look-a-like, Heather distributed our stick-on mustaches for even more giggles (and a few stares from the other patrons).

After dinner, we made our way to Mandala where we lounged on outdoor sofa seating and were completely entertained by watching the people on the street. In fact, Diablo (an older gentleman) was the most entertaining. Our waiter told us that Diablo comes to the Hotel Zone every night as he has done for the past 10 years and dances in front of various bars and night clubs. Very entertaining and a fabulous dancer! After we had enough of Mandala, we walked around the zone, got the scoop on Coco Bongo and were finally coerced into Congo Bar (they offered us a round of free drinks). Next thing I knew, Vandy and I are on the dance platform with Cancun’s version of Pitbull in a zebra robe. We danced for a while, then wanted down to our drinks, but Pitbull chained off the entrance so we were stuck there in short skirts dancing for the entire bar. Welcome to Cancun!

With the morning approaching and an early flight in the back of our minds, we decided to call it a night and head back to the resort. As we were waiting in our taxi, we caught a glimpse of a drunk guy urinating towards us about 15 feet away. I explained (jokingly) to Vandy that this was the male stripper we hired for her. However, when they guy started running towards our car while still urinating, we yelled at the driver to step on the gas and the out of there.

Ziplining: Girls Bachelorette Party Getaway to Cancun

Ziplining was on Vandy’s bucket list, so she was very excited as we arrived a Selvatica. We were greeted by their super friendly and welcoming staff who helped get us geared up for the adventure of zipping across lines to 12 different stations located in the jungle canopy.

Carly was looking forward to tackling a fear. “I have a fear of heights, so zip lining will be a great opportunity to challenge those apprehensions while getting a unique and amazing view of the jungles of Mexico,” she said.

We all zipped, flipped upside down, posed for action shots and had some of the most fun you can have with unattractive helmets and construction gloves on. After the zipping, we stopped at the Plunge where Heather and Vandy bungeed off a 30-foot high platform for a little more adrenaline.

“The ziplining was awesome, but the jump from the platform was even better,” Vandy said. “The staff was so energetic; there was never a dull moment!”

We then climbed into an army truck and were transported to Selvatica’s Cenote, which is a freshwater sink hole where everyone was able to zip, dive or walk into the water for a refreshing swim. Since we had no towels and are all from Florida, we decided the water was too cold. We perched on a deck facing the action and decided that watching the action was even better than being a part of it as we watched European men in very small swimsuits bellyflop into the water. After, we made our way back into the army trucks (thanks Selvatica staff for hiding in the bushes and scaring me to death) and returned to Selvatica’s headquarters for lunch, which was fantastic!

“Selvatica was my favorite experience of the entire trip. I was hesitant to zip line because of my fear of heights, but the staff was very experienced and reassuring. The jungle was beautiful and the trip to the Cenore was an unexpected surprise,” Carly said. “And the lunch was some of the best food I had in Mexico! Overall, it was a terrific experience that I would recommend to anyone traveling to Cancun.”

After checking out the Selvatica ‘merchandise,’ we were sad to leave. Many thanks to the amazing team at Selvatica....Alejandro, Carlos, Jhony, Raul (our James Franco look-a-like), Panther (and anyone else I am leaving out) for an unforgettable Cancun memory. With our adventure over for the day, we headed back to the resort for some more R&R, which would be much needed before the crazy evening ahead.

Girls Bachelorette Party Getaway to Cancun - Spa Time

While Heather and Carly spent the afternoon lounging and sampling cocktails, Vandy and I went to Le Blanc Spa Resort, which is nestled in a secluded enclave between Nichupte Lagoon and the glistening Caribbean Sea and ranked #3 in the Top 10 All-Inclusive Resorts in the World. We were escorted to the spa where we were surrounded by bamboo gardens, sensuous wood and marble floors. The spa features a unique fusion of Asian and European traditions that provides refreshment and rejuvenation for mind, body and spirit.

Vandy and I arrived early to enjoy the spa amenities, and then eagerly went to our separate treatment rooms for our massages. We both agreed they were some of the best massages we’ve ever had. I felt like a bowl of Jell-O as we sipped Jamaican water in total relaxation afterwards.

“The staff was so attentive,” Vandy said. “They paid attention to all the minor details that make the spa experience so unique and wonderful.”

We joined the other ladies at Villa del Palmar’s Zama restaurant that is located near the beach. As we dined in the open air, we recapped the day and chatted about tomorrow’s adventure: ziplining.

Girls Bachelorette Party Getaway to Cancun - Welcome

Just in time for Vandy’s Bachelorette Party, Cancun’s Villa del Palmar Cancun unveiled the third and final phase of the resort in December. This five-star hotel, which is situated on serene Playa Mujeres in Cancun, Mexico, features 415 luxurious guest rooms, new restaurants and a tranquil jungle-themed spa.

After some intense wedding planning, Vandy was ready for some R&R. “I am very excited for the opportunity to go to Cancun,” she said.

Heather and Carly were apprehensive about leaving their kids for the weekend, but that changed as the departure date approached. “I can't wait to get to Cancun! I'm mostly excited about relaxing and enjoying time with my girlfriends,” Carly said. “Even when we get together for an event at home, we spend most of the time cooking, chasing our kids around, cleaning up....then it's over! It will be so nice to catch up with the girls without those distractions.”

Cancun is a world-class tourist resort destination and a thriving community of 450,000 full-time residents. Its greatest asset is its natural marine playground that sits on 14 miles of white sand and enjoys sun more than 200 days a year.

After I almost missed our departure plane in Orlando (don’t ask), we arrived at the airport and headed straight to the “Welcome Bar” to wait for our driver we re-named E-Dog (only because we couldn’t pronounce his real name). After a few cervezas we drove through the bustling Cancun hotel zone and found our ‘home away from home’ at Villa del Palmar, which is about 30 minutes from the airport. Upon arrival at the resort, the ladies were all smiles as we were completely mesmerized by the lush grounds, blue water and white sandy beaches. Each of Villa del Palmar Cancun's luxuriously appointed guest rooms has a private terrace and is furnished with kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs and spacious spa tubs (plus a roomy hammock on the balcony that we loved). We quickly changed into our swimsuits, made our way to the beach, ordered cocktails and lunch at the tiki bar, and then parked ourselves in the resort’s beachside lounge chairs.

Before the trip, Carly explained, “my expectations for Cancun are to get some sun and relaxation, enjoy great food and drinks by the water, and most importantly, have quality time with my friends in a fun atmosphere.” CHECK :)

Stressed About The Holidays? Here Are Some De-Stressing Holiday Tips

The holidays are a particularly stressful time for people, especially women. Women are charged with shopping, Christmas parties, keeping up with the kids, juggling holiday schedules, dealing with traffic and crowds, cooking, entertaining, hosting relatives/visitors, and a myriad of other details to assure the “forced family fun” that the holidays bring comes off without a hitch.
With all of these responsibilities, it is important for women to remember to take care of themselves in order to avoid fatigue and burn out and, most importantly, so they too enjoy the holidays. With that in mind, the Girls Getaway Guide has compiled the following list of ways in which women can take care of themselves during this stressful time of year.

Pamper Yourself - While your focus is often on others, be sure to take time out for yourself. Get a massage, a manicure, get your hair done, etc. Spa time, even if brief, is a great was to re-charge your holiday batteries and ensure some “me time.”

Escape Reality – Find a nice, quiet place to escape reality. Curl up with a book or magazine, take a bubble bath or just drink some herbal tea. This will help you divert your mind from the holiday madness and focus on something else for a while.

Schedule a Girlfriends Date – One of the best ways to release stress is to talk about it, and no one can relate better to holiday stress than your girlfriends. Schedule a “date” with them. Perhaps you meet for lunch or dinner, but make sure you set time aside to commiserate with those who understand you the best. Laughter will do wonders!

Exercise – It is important to remain physically active. Exercise will release endorphins into your body and help prevent emotional overload. Working out can include aerobic activity and your usual exercise routine, but it can also include relaxing workouts such as yoga and Pilates. Whatever you do, stay active and avoid falling into the sedentary lifestyle that the holidays often seem to catapult us into.

Be Organized and Delegate – Women often feel as though they have to do everything for everyone, especially around the holidays. You don’t. In fact, it is helpful to delegate tasks to others. It makes them feel helpful and a part of the holiday festivities. In order to delegate, one must be organized to evaluate what must be done. Coordinate a schedule, have a calendar and delegate tasks. This will reduce your stress and get others involved.

When it comes to Christmastime magic, it seems that “34th Streets” across the country are a bona fide breeding ground for just that. For more than a century, Newport Beach’s “Christmas Boat Parade” has delighted spectators with a “Christmas-sea” feeling all its own. A fine flotilla of some 200 vibrantly decorated vessels, from multimillion-dollar yachts right down to simple canoes, glides through Newport Harbor as holiday music and costumed carolers fill the air with melodious merrymaking. The brilliant boat parade (it’s the oldest one in the country) attracts close to a million viewers; it’s held nightly from December 14 through December 18 and lasts about 2.5 hours – show up on the closing night for a fireworks finale. Nestled in southwestern Missouri’s scenic Ozark Mountains, the city of Branson transforms into a veritable winter wonderland each holiday season, bursting at the seams with lavish light displays and dozens of Christmas spirit-infused shows and events. For the most gleeful glitz, head to the 1880s-style theme park Silver Dollar City, site of “An Old Time Christmas,” with an elaborate light-and-music show showcasing no fewer than 4 million radiant lights and 1,000 decorated Christmas trees. Highlights include the musically inclined 5-story Special Effects Christmas Tree, which, along with the surrounding square, beams with over a million lights that “dance” to select Christmas tunes; there’s also a holiday light parade with light-embellished musical floats that runs twice each evening (now–December 30, closed Christmas Eve and Christmas; park admission of $55 adults and $45 ages 4 to 11 applies; www.silverdollarcity.com).

San Antonio, TX
San Antonio’s River Walk is always a hotbed of activity, but the holidays take it to new heights, particularly so in 2011, with the infusion of 20 times more Christmas lights (thanks to the city’s move to more energy-efficient LED lighting). You’ll find the bulk of the 1.8 million holiday lights garnishing nearly 200 trees (done up with 10,000 bulbs apiece) and on 20 holiday-hued bridges, all brightened up even further by carolers bellowing their tunes nightly from passing river barges (singers perform November 26– December 18). The festivities kick off on November 25 (and run through January 1), when the switch is flipped and the “Ford Holiday River Parade,” complete with an entourage of lit-up festooned floats, unfolds.

The quarter is also home to the luminous “Fiesta de las Luminarias” on select weekends (December 2–18), whereby some 6,000 luminarias (candle-lit paper lanterns) symbolically light the way for the Holy Family. Our final day in Aspen and after tidying up Le Mazot, we headed out to the Aspen shopping center for lunch at Poppycock’s where I had a breakfast burrito (they serve breakfast all day…open until 2pm) with fresh fruit and Casey had the Turkado from the lunch menu. This was basically a TurkeyLT add avacado and swiss which Casey thoroughly enjoyed with a side of chili. We then wondered down to the Aspen Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory where I purchased a Macadamia Bear Claw…enough said. The shops in Aspen are high-end sporting a good representation including Burberry, Prada and Ralph Lauren with some specialty and gift shops as well. After wondering about and enjoying yet another windless, sunny mid-day, we headed east on our trek back to Denver for Casey to fly to LA the next morning.

On the way, we stopped in Glenwood Springs for a little more shopping and found some fun, eclectic shops including Confetti Design, Personality Clothing, Lavender Rayne and Treadz. A couple of hours shopping and we were back in the car and on the road again back to Denver.
En route, we got hungry again and stopped at Dam Brewery in Dillon, CO. We split a delicious chicken and sausage pasta served with salad and bread. Definitely, a homey, lodge-type atmosphere with a friendly waiter named David. We finally made our way back and called it a night and a successful and fun Girls Getaway with the Getaway Girl and my good friend, Casey Wohl!!

Today we focused our efforts on skiing at Aspen Mountain. After picking up our equipment from the super friendly and over the top helpful crew at Incline Sports, we headed up the mountain in the Gondola. We happened to be riding with a young man who quickly inserted his ipod into the player and serenaded us with music on the way up. He shared that his faves are Katy Perry, Lady GaGa and Black-eyed Peas. A couple of runs in, we needed sustenance and stopped off at Il Miluno slopeside for a small feast of Club Sandwich and Soup Sampler. All were uniquely crafted with the sandwich featuring a twist of fried egg in place of the usual ham and the lentil soup, egg drop soup and tuscan soup all outside the usual ingredients. After lunch, we sat and soaked up the sun as the weather was perfect with very little wind and not a cloud in the sky. Oh and I guess I should mention here, the flourless chocolate cake that I had for dessert that was more like a piece of fudge and just a little less than a slice of heaven! Content and relaxed, we just hung out for a while and then, headed up the mountain for one last run before returning to Le Mazot for some blogging and relaxation in the comfort of our own place. After another nap, we pulled ourselves together and headed out for more shopping and exploration. We ended up at Jimmy’s for dinner and ordered from the bar menu which is more than ample. I chose the Oven Roasted Pork Tenderloin and Casey had the Southwest Ahi Tuna Salad. I substituted Mac & Cheese for the grits that accompany the pork which was an excellent choice as the Mac & Cheese is to die for!! After dinner, we headed back to Le Mazot and had a quiet evening watching movies and packing up for our expedition back to Denver tomorrow.

Girls Getaway to Aspen - Day 2 (Guest Blog)

What a great day we had starting with a workout at the Grand Hyatt Aspen where my brother also owns a time share. We then, went to lunch at the Red Onion which was a down-to-earth sports-type bar with tables in the back for a more family type atmosphere. The Red Onion was born at the height of the silver boom in 1892 when Tom Latta built the two-story structure on Cooper Avenue. The saloon’s business came from men interested in sports of the day. Prize fighting, wrestling & cycling. Local legend has it that the upstairs operated as a brothel. At the time it was a standalone building and one of the three places in Aspen to get a meal. Casey had the Mediterranean Steak Salad and I had the Sedona Chicken Sandwich which was spicy and delightful especially with their spicy fries. Next, we shopped around a bit and had ice cream at the Paradise Bakery. We then spectated a few runs of World Cup Skiing which happened to be taking place while we were in town. By that time, we were pretty exhausted from the walking and the altitude so took a brief nap until dinner time. We dined at L’ Hostaria where Casey and I shared some exquisite Bruschetta and Homemade Spinach Pasta with Meat Sauce which was wonderful as well. From there, we caught the Cowboy Mouth concert on the Gondola Plaza and Fireworks after from the top of the Grand Hyatt with our new friend, Captain John. We met a lovely couple from Florida who told us stories of their world travels and were so gracious to take us into their suite to watch the fireworks. One thing is for sure, Casey has never met a stranger. After the activities of the night, we were again exhausted and headed back to Le Mazot for bed.

After several busy months at work, I finally have some time off to start blogging and what do I do but take a trip! The thing that is special about this trip is that I am with Casey Wohl, The Getaway Girl, who writes travel books for women and takes women who are recovering from a catastrophic illness or event in their lives on trips to help them get away from it all and figuratively, “Leave their Baggage at Home”.
So, Casey and I met in Denver, CO and drove 4 hours to my brother’s condo in Aspen, Le Mazot (petit chalet). On the way, we stopped in Vail at la cantina for a small, inexpensive dinner that was just the right thing but definitely more of quaint, quick place than anything fancy. However, the guacamole was tasty and the soft chicken taco was good. On the way, I got to hear Casey’s stories of women and trips that she had taken this year who had survived betrayal, divorce, breast cancer, death of a son and other life changing events and the wonderful places she has taken them such as Canada and France as well as within the United States. We had previously taken a trip to Santa Fe together and I had gotten to see her in action using her social media network to promote and report out on various activities during the experience. Now, it was my turn to take Casey on a trip so she could relax and recharge.
We arrived in Aspen and eventually found Le Mazot, if you are ever interested in staying there just contact me and I can refer you to my brother. It is the cutest, most quaint little condo decked out in every nook and cranny with collectibles that make the experience unique and homey. It has one bedroom and a small bath so perfect for a couple, individual or small family to get away. There is also a really nice pull out sofa bed, where I slept, which was comfortable. Jorge’s partner, Rick, has gone to great detail to ensure that the guests have every possible need fulfilled. We were both exhausted after our trek to Le Mazot so, we headed to bed. Today, we will be exploring Aspen Village to see what it has to offer. Will write more and add photos later. Till then!!

Study Says: Girlfriends Are Key To Women's Optimism

As women, we all know that girlfriends are an important part of our lives. But we may not have realized just how important. A new study finds that women are more optimistic than men and it is largely due to our girlfriends.

According to a recent article in USA Today, ".....25% of women ages 45 to 55 give themselves a 10 out of 10 on optimism about their future, finds a Gallup-Healthways daily poll of Americans' well-being. These women have a sense of meaning and engagement. They love learning new things. And they expect in five years to be at the top of a ladder of well-being."

The article also states: "The most optimistic women spend about six hours a day in social interaction. Some of that time may be with a friend at work, with family, a husband or children, or with a partner, a love interest or neighbors. But girlfriends are the bedrock. The most optimistic women have an inner circle of anywhere from four to a dozen friends who 'have their back' and will drop everything to help in a crisis."

So if you get flack for chatting with your girlfriends too much, just tell them you are working on increasing your optimism :).

After a quick stop at Alziari, a well-known olive oil store, we made our way back to the hotel and prepared for our farewell French Riviera dinner at La Petite Maison with Monsieur Christophe Aldunate, the hotel’s general manager, and Liliana who told us this was one of the best restaurants in all of Nice and Bono’s (of the band U2) favorite place to eat when in town. It is very popular with celebrities. In fact, Barbara Streisand was there a week before we dined there, and Dita Von Teese, a popular burlesque dancer, was eating there while we were there.

Along with the terrific food, great company and honest host, we were thrilled when Akon’s “Sexy Bitch” song started playing and the staff escorted an ignited sign that read “Welcome to Nice!” to our table. It was the perfect way to end our perfect trip to the French Riviera. I miss you ladies already!!!

Girls Getaway to the French Riviera - Sightseeing, Food, Shopping & A Wine Revolution

The next morning was full of exploration as we were escorted by Olivia and Liliana to around Old Town with our first stop at Castle Hill. First the Greek Acropolis, then the medieval stronghold before the population settled at its foot to form what is now the Old Town. The Castle Hill, which is 270 feet high, is a wonderful place to stroll. We enjoyed the incredible panorama over the city from Terrasse Frédéric Nietzsche, located on the highest point of the Castle Hill Park. After our hike up Castle Hill, we toured the Lascaris Palace, which was the residence of the Vintimille family from 1657 to the French Revolution. This historic building was restored after 1963 to become a museum, and now houses antique instruments. All of Old Town is a lovely setting of Baroque architecture, delectable restaurants and a maze of narrow streets lined with amazing shops and boutiques. One of our favorites, Girofle et Cannelle, sells all types of salts and peppers in a very interactive manner.

We stopped at the wine cellar Cave Bianchi, which was started in 1860 and is one of the oldest wine cellars in Nice, for a wine tasting and sampled French wines in the same caves as Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp. Franck gave us a great overview of the history of wine and the current wine revolution that began in 1985. He explained that the current revolution in wine is rose wines, as the “pink wave” started in St Tropez 20 years ago and has moved to London then New York City then San Francisco and now throughout the rest of the world. He made the profound statement that, “wine is the one thing you can taste that can remind you of a place or time as it evokes memories.” No wonder I like it so much :)!

After the tasting, we enjoyed an outdoor lunch at Le Grand Balcon followed by shopping at Cours Saleya, one of the busiest parts of Old Nice with an antique market on Mondays. What a fabulous day!

Girls Getaway to the French Riviera - A Palace & Perfume

As we woke up the next morning to transfer to another luxurious hotel, the Palais de la Mediterranee in Nice, some of us were moving quite slowly as the festivities from the previous evening had caught up with us. Nice is the largest city in the French Riviera and home of France’s third-largest airport. Upon arrival at our new hotel, we had lunch with Liliana, the hotel’s sales & marketing manager, at Le 3e located inside the hotel. Although food wasn’t the most important thing to me at the time, our server made the experience absolutely wonderful and the food was delicious. We checked into our fabulous suites at Palais de la Mediterranee (thank you for my awesome views of the Med Sea, but it was difficult checking emails while overlooking the beach and water...lol). This hotel has a wide range of accomodations, including suites that have a terrace, large living room, dressing room, and beautiful ocean views. And I was conveniently a few doors away from the fantastic Hammam spa room (hammam means 'spreader of warmth'), which is open to hotel guests.

After lunch we drove to the ancient town of Eze to Galimard Perfume where we got to make our own perfume and learn about the making of and history of perfumes. This was one of the coolest things I have ever done. Caroline, a trained perfumer, helped us mix and concoct the perfect scent for each one of us during a six-step smelling and measuring and mixing process (watch video). Girls Getaway to the French Riviera - La Palme d'Or, La Chunga & Champagne Bottles on Fire

After a hotel tour (including the 10,700 square foot suite; one of the largest in Europe), we enjoyed a delectable dinner at La Palme d’Or Restuarant, a two-star Michelin restaurant featuring Chef Christian Sinicropi. This was one of the most decadent meals I have ever eaten with the presentation just as spectacular as the food. In fact, the chef and his wife make all of the serving dishes by hand so they create the exact type of presentation for each entree. We started with the Dublin Bay Prawn, marinated and roasted, as a tartare seasoned with sour and smoked flavors with splits of black truffle, purple Hollandaise sauce, basil leaves and combawa citrus fruits, and a cubic of beetroot gazpacho.

Our entree was The Cheek of Veal, preserved and served with young carrots with mimosa seasoning and zests of citrus fruits. After that, we were presented with a selection of cheeses, a pre-dessert, then the restaurant’s signature dessert, The Chocolate ‘Palme d’Or’ that is creamy and crispy golden Jivara chocolate with a Tonka bean ice cream. And if that was not enough, we enjoyed herb tea steamed right in front of us after the herbs were hand cut from the plant. To top it off, we enjoyed fireworks over the Mediterranean Sea thanks to a Russian wedding reception that was taking place on the beach just outside our table's balcony. Then, on our way out of the restaurant, we received a parting gift....more dessert!

After dinner, Nubia, Lara and I made our way to La Chunga, a piano bar/club located just across the street from our hotel, for a night on the town. After all, we were in Cannes on a Saturday night. One minute we are outside with our cocktails, the next minute we are inside and someone is pouring us champagne out of a huge bottle that is on fire. Welcome to the party! The party ended for me when an angry (and very intoxicated) French woman threw champagne on me. It was very dramatic....just like something out of a movie!

Girls Getaway to the French Riviera - Yachts, Monks & Wine

The next morning we left the hotel’s pontoon, boarded our private boat and made our way to Saint-Honorat Island, which is located off the Bay of Cannes, opposite the Hotel Martinez. In the year 405 on this parcel of land in the middle of the sea, a monk named Saint Honorat established a place for the monastic life. In 1869, the island saw the arrival of the first Cistercian monks from the monastery of Senanque. Today, about 20 monks still reside there are maintain a vineyard, Lerins Abbey, which produces about 40,000-50,000 bottles per year. The monks of Saint-Honorat (or Monk Island as I called it) are earning acclaim for their wines. We were fortunate enough to enjoy a private wine tasting while at the island.

After working up an appetite tasting wine, we enjoyed lunch at the island restaurant La Tonnelle, which involved more wine, then returned to Cannes by boat. The French Riviera is a major yachting and cruising area with several marinas along its coast, so the boat ride provided close views of some incredible yachts. The Riviera hosts 50% of the world's super yacht fleet, with 90% of all super yachts visiting the region's coast at least once in their lifetime.

Once back, we toured the old town of Cannes “Le Suquet” with its interesting history, lovely narrow streets and amazing views from the top of the Musee de la Castre.

Located on the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France, the French Riviera is the perfect place for a Girlfriend Getaway. Plus, you know you are going to a great destination when a supermodel is aboard your flight!

On the famous Boulevard de La Croisette in the heart of downtown Cannes, next to the beautiful sandy beach is the iconic Hotel Martinez, which would be our luxurious home for the next two nights. Stars such as Eva Longoria, Benicio del Toro, Tim Burton, Woody Allen, Javier Bardeem, Naomie Watts, Meg Ryan, Lionel Richie, Pharrel Williams and Mila Jovovitch have all stayed at the Hotel Martinez, so (of course) we felt right at home as we each checked into our own suite with an outdoor terrace overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

The Hotel’s own private beach, Zplage, is just steps across the boulevard from the front door and evokes a laid back atmosphere in the daytime with sun loungers on the pontoon, as well as delicious food and drinks. At night in the summer, Zplage turns into a Cannes hot spot complete with music (focusing on disco and seventies), cocktails and a tapas menu.

After lunch at Zplage’s waterfront restaurant, we were treated to our choice of spa treatments. I chose the one-hour Lancaster Facial Absolute Oxygen Sensation. For most facials, you must chose either moisture or anti-aging. However, with this treatment options, you no longer have to choose. This beauty ritual does it all, responding precisely to what your skin needs with in-depth re-oxygenation and regeneration of the skin. After our spa treatments, we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon at the Zplage Beach Club with our own sun loungers on the pontoon and a bottle of rose wine. I quickly found out that in the French Riviera, they don’t ask you if you want wine, they simply ask you what color wine you want.

Our evening began with champagne at the hotel bar, Bar l’Amiral that features live music and both indoor and outdoor seating, and was followed by dinner at the Bistro Le Relais Restaurant. We all turned in early as we were still trying to adapt to the time change.

Everyday Etiquette, For The (Sometimes) Not So Nice Travel World

I am thrilled to share a wonderful new book, Everyday Etiquette: How to Navigate 101 Common and Uncommon Social Situations, written by my friend Patricia Rossi who is also a correspondent for the NBC Daytime TV Show. We have spent several mornings in the show’s Green Room and always have the best conversations as you cannot help but instantly like her. Like me, Patricia was raised in the south and spent most of her childhood as a tomboy.

Patricia is an etiquette coach, consultant and public speaker. Her nationally syndicated Manners Minute airs weekly on a number of NBC, CBS and ABC television stations. She’s Twitter’s #1 etiquette professional and she (like me) resides in Florida.

When Patricia sent me a copy of her new book, I couldn’t wait to read it, especially the Chapter Eight about Travel. How appropriate that I read this book in an airport during a three-hour flight delay. As if traveling by plane is not challenging enough, imagine a plane full of people who have already waited three hours just to be crammed into a small space with bad air. I am now with many cranky and unhappy people, which is when etiquette and manners are seldom found.

Airplane/airport etiquette (or the lack thereof) is one of my biggest pet peeves since I spend more time there than I do at my house. Patricia’s tip: “Before pushing back in your seat, be considerate. Take a glance backward and give a verbal cue to the person seated behind you....” should be printed and posted on the seat back in front of everyone. I cannot tell you how many times people have flown back in their seats only to slam into my laptop or even hit me in the face. It’s just plain rude.

I could go on and on about travel etiquette, but Patricia’s book does a great job of covering the essentials. Her book also covers etiquette in the areas of social media, introductions, table manners, business matters, children, petiquette, giving/receiving gifts, sports and celebrations. In addition (hey singles), her section on dating gives quite a few helpful tips (yes, I have been on dates with men who snap their fingers at waitstaff and are completely annoying).

Our last day in Alaska was spent with the Seavey family at their Ididaride Sled Dog Tour. Mitch Seavey, 2004 Iditarod Champion, and his family have about 200 working sled dogs. The intrigue of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, also known as Alaska’s Super Bowl, came alive as we met competitors and heard their stories. The Iditarod race covers over 1,150 miles of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer with jagged mountain ranges, frozen river, dense forest, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast at the mushers and their dog teams. Add to that temperatures far below zero, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility, the hazards of overflow, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills, and you have the Iditarod.

After a brief introduction to the family and business, we walked back to where the dog are kept. I was expecting covered kennels, and was shocked to find tons of dogs each equipped with their own, private kennel. As the staff started hooking up the sled, the dogs became more and more excited, almost saying “pick me; I want to go.” It was incredible feel how powerful, excited and smart these dogs are. Since we were there in the summer, we rode in a wheeled cart that they use to train the dogs with when there’s no snow on the ground. We rode behind 16 dogs for two miles mushing through the Alaskan wilderness to the base of Resurrection Mountain and along Box Canyon Creek. After our ride, we toured the kennel facilities, saw what the mushers wear during the Iditarod race, and met future sled dogs that were only a few months old. This tour was chosen as one of Alaska’s Top Twenty Attractions, and is certainly one I will never forget.

The next morning we checked out of the Alyeska Resort and continued driving south to Seward for the Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise. We opted for the four-hour Resurrection Bay Cruise that included a lunch stop at Fox Island for a salmon and prime rib lunch. During the boat ride, we saw otters, sea lions (my favorite), horned puffins, bald eagles and tons of birds. As the boat arrived back at the dock, we saw fishermen unloading their daily fishing catch of silver salmon into wheelbarrows.

We checked into the Seward Windsong Lodge, a charming lodge with several out buildings scattered around the property. It’s award-winning Resurrection Roadhouse Restaurant and the Goliath Bar & Grill was the perfect dining choice as they offered an ample list of local beer and had a great wine and cocktail selection....very important after a tough day of sightseeing :).

Girls Getaway to Alaska - Day 5

The next morning we picked up our rental car at Avis and drove to Alyeska Resort in Girdwood. We checked in to the beautiful resort and met Molly at the Ascending Path Yurt for departure on the Glacier Hike.

The Spencer Glacier is located just South of Portage Valley and the Turnagain Arm in the Kenai Mountains and the Chugach National Forest. It is entirely off the road system, so we rode a train from Girdwood to the Spencer Whistle Stop. From the Spencer Whistle Stop, our group of three, hiked to an overlook to enjoy outstanding views of the glacier and icebergs floating in the Spencer terminal lake. The total distance from the train to the edge of the glacier is more than three miles of flat Forest Service maintained trails. The last half mile is rugged moraine (think huge black dirt piles) walking.

The five hours of hiking included tons of photos and stops to learn about interesting local wildlife, history and glaciology. At the glacier's edge we geared up with helmets and crampons, ate lunch on a the glacier itself and then traveled out onto the glacier ice to explore the amazing ice features (blue ice, crevasses, ice caves, moulins, etc) with Molly as our guide. Words cannot describe how incredible this experience was...a “must do” in Alaska!

Girls Getaway to Alaska - Day 4

And if all of these adventures were not enough, we woke up early the next morning for some fun on the water.....the white water of Nenana River. We checked in for Denali Raft Adventure Canyon Run at 7:30 AM. With barely enough coffee in me, we were stuffed into dry suits and outfitted with rubber gloves and hats for the 11-mile trip to Healy. After “worst case scenario” instructions from Peacock, we boarded our inflatable raft and braved the rapids. How bad was it? We got soaked! In fact, it was so rough I got water up my nose during one rapid. But it was a complete blast and we enjoyed making new friends with guides Peacock and Bacon, as well as our raftmates Dony, Ehli, Mark and Janice! What a great group!! After white water rafting, we went back to the railroad station and boarded the train back to Anchorage.

The next morning was an early one as we boarded the bus for the Tundra Wilderness Tour at 6:20 AM en route to Denali. Our guide for the day, Lisa Frederic, has been in Alaska for 30 years and is an active dog musher who has participated in the Iditarod Dog Sled competition. During the day, she shared so much fascinating information about Denali, Mt McKinley and Alaska....what an amazing tour guide! The 7.5 hour bus ride explored just a portion of the 6 million acre state park (bigger than the state of Massachusetts). We had a very lucky day as we saw about 10 Grizzley bears, Dall Sheep, falcons and the tallest point in North America....Mt McKinley that provided an incredible view the day we visited.

After the bus ride, we went on an evening ATV ride with Denali ATV Adventures into an old coal mining area near the park border where we got an aerial view of Lake Otto and the town of Healy. After we worked up an appetite, we made our way to the famous Denali Salmon Bake Restaurant where Dani greeted us with pink heart-shaped sunglasses....we loved her right away! We feasted on elk sliders (my fave), halibut tacos and a yak-a-dilla (yes, yak meat). It was all great and my apricot beer was the perfect pairing!

The next morning we took the hotel shuttle to the railroad station and boarded the Alaska Railroad for Denali. The eight-hour train ride provides a fantastic view of the Alaskan countryside. Once we arrived at Denali, we were shuttled to our new home for the next two nights, the McKinley Chalet Resort. Located just across the street from shopping, stores and activities, the resort had everything you could want, including the Nenana View Grill & Bar that features a gorgeous view of the Nenana River (and a great place to enjoy a bottle of wine and a reindeer sausage, artichoke & mushroom pizza like we did).

Girls Getaway to Alaska - Day 1

I have always wanted to go to Alaska, and when my friend Diana said that’s where she wanted to go for her 50th birthday, we booked our flights immediately. We arrived in Anchorage ready to see as much of The Last Frontier as we could fit in one week.

On our first morning, we were picked up at our hotel, the Inlet Tower Hotel and Suites, by Rust’s Flying Service who took us to our float plane. From there, we departed for Redoubt Bay Lodge, which is located 70 miles southwest of Anchorage. Redoubt Bay is home to one of the most concentrated and viewable bear populations in Alaska. Our float plane pilot, Curtis, set the mood for a great day by pointing out interesting sites during the flight. We even caught a glimpse of a Beluga Whale while over Cook Bay. We arrived at Redoubt and were greeted by Amy, the lodge manager. With a bubbly personality and an excitement about the day, we couldn’t help but like her immediately. After some coffee and muffins in the lodge and a brief overview of the area and plans for the day, we boarded a pontoon boat with Amy and went in search of bears through the chain of Big River Lakes.

There were several fishing boats on the water and in action as this area is home to sockeye and coho salmon. While we were watching the salmon getting ready to make a run up the river (it was absolutely amazing and looked like a shark feeding frenzy), Amy spotted a black bear walking along the waters edge right next to us. It was incredible to see this bear in its natural environment in search of food (as long as we weren’t it). We even had the unique experience to go "bogging" where we took off our shoes and walk along a water bog (spongy grass bed). After seeing two more black bears, we headed back to the lodge for lunch. Redoubt has two chefs on staff and they did not disappoint with a beautiful lunch anchored by a delicious salmon burger.

Dinner that night was at Ginger Restaurant. Our favorite dish was the Baked Sea Scallops “Mac & Cheese,” which is seared and oven-finished jumbo Alaskan scallops served over penne pasta with three-cheese cream sauce drizzled with truffle oil. Amazing! After dinner we went to the hotel’s Mixx Grill Bar (think Cheers but in Alaska) where we met locals and visitors and made new friends. If you are ever there, be sure to ask for Happy Harold.

Girls Getaway to Northern Michigan - Day 3

After a relaxing morning at the resort and a wonderful massage at the spa, we were ready for some fly fishing on one of Michigan’s gorgeous rivers. We met up with Phil Croff from CC Guide Service so I could try my hand a fly fishing. Just putting on the waders proved challenge enough for me, but with my new fashion statement (waders are sexy), I was ready to catch some fish. We ended up with no fish (although I had a big bite), but we had a great time fishing until midnight under a full moon in one of Phil’s handcrafted row boats that was beautiful.

I quickly realized that my trip to Northern Michigan was too short. Treetops Resort is currently undergoing a massive renovation, so I will be anxious to see the final result. Girls Getaway to Northern Michigan - Day 2

My first morning in Michigan was spent rafting on the Sturgeon River. Three of us were sent off on our inflatable raft with some oars and a half-concocted plan as to how we’d work together as a team. Much to my and Chelle’s surprise, we actually did pretty well. The river was relaxing enough for us to take in the natural beauty but provided enough action that kept us entertained. Many thanks to Big Bear Adventures for a fun morning.

After our rafting expedition, I served as cart girl and beer opener as the others played Treetops Resort’s Threetops Course, which is considered the Best Par-3 Course on Earth by some. Designed by Rick Smith, his first par three course received national recognition since it opened, and it consistently ranks as the #1 par three course in America by Golf Magazine, Golfweek and Golf & Travel. It's perhaps the most recognized par three course in America. For a number of years, Threetops hosted the ESPN Par 3 Shootout.

Later that evening, we made our way to Downtown Gaylord to attend the Gaylord Alpenfest, which has been one of Northern Michigan’s most unique and fun festivals for 47 years. This annual Swiss-themed festival is held in July with live music, Queen’s Pageant, parade, carnival, food and drinks. Why Alpenfest? Gaylord’s sister city is Pontresina, Switzerland, which is a tourist community of about 1,800 people. This 850-year-old village is located at the foot of the majestic Bernina Peaks. With live entertainment and wacky contests (Ladies Best Ankles and Men’s Best Knees), Alpenfest is great fun!

Michigan’s "Little Finger" and "Tip of the Mitt" region is a year round recreational wonderland, where world-class golf and winter sports have replaced the logging operations that brought settlers to the area.

In July, I made my way to Gaylord, Michigan, which is home to Treetops Resort. I went from New York City to Detroit to Traverse City, MI by plane, and then on to Gaylord which was a 75-minute car ride northeast from Traverse City.

During the drive to Gaylord, I saw Lake Michigan, as well as the rugged natural charm and gorgeous landscapes that resonate so well with the state’s tagline: Pure Michigan. I was surprised by the abundance of locally-produced fudge shops in the area...these people must REALLY love their fudge here. Plus, I had one of the best shuttle drivers ever....Pat Sheridan. The name Trump is synonymous with “the best,” so I was well prepared to encounter an exceptional level of hospitality during my stay at the Trump SoHo New York. Located on Spring Street and just blocks away from some of the city’s best galleries, boutiques and restaurants, this 46-story luxury property is home to guests and owners of the 391 guestrooms and suites.

I was worried the hotel would reflect an “opulent” Trump-esque feel to it (after all, I have seen the inside of his house on TV). Although that décor is nice to look at, it certainly isn’t my taste or the atmosphere I want to spend three nights in. However, when I arrived at the 46-story property, I immediately felt at home. From the welcoming staff to the grand yet intimate lobby, this hotel has a boutique feel to it despite its large capacity. The décor is reminiscent of the old neighborhood with woods, metals, chocolates and browns, all providing a very comfortable feel, which is not easily done in a hotel.

I checked in and arrived at my suite on the 27^th floor. Unlike many cramped hotel rooms in NYC, the suite featured a huge bathroom, plus a half bath, living room, microwave and ample storage space. But the best feature was its incredible views of the city’s spectacular skyline, the Hudson River, Empire State Building and the surrounding neighborhoods, which were accessible by a touch of a button by opening and closing the drapes in the living room, bedroom and bathroom. In fact, the bedroom featured floor to ceiling windows on two walls. The views were breathtaking!

Located on the seventh floor, the 6,000 square-foot outdoor pool deck provided a relaxing Sunday afternoon atmosphere for me and the girls. Although lounge chairs were difficult to come by, Peter finally reserved some space for us and we indulged in the sunny NYC day and alfresco cocktails from the full-service Bar d’ Eau, which is open seasonally during the summer.

At first glace, the 11,000-square-foot Spa at Trump, located on the seventh and eighth floors, appeared to be a typical luxury hotel spa. However, I soon learned that it is home to two separate luxury hammam rooms (a Turkish bath that functions like a steam bath but with a focus on water), the first in New York and something I have never seen in a U.S. spa before. A must do! And if an all-day spa day is what you and the girls are seeking, you can reserve one of Trump SoHo’s three luxurious spa suites, located on the eighth floor. Girls Getaway to Maui - Day 4 Hawaiian Canoe

And just when we thought we had done it all, Tara offered to host us on an authentic Hawaiian Canoe Excursion the next morning. We woke up early again, but ready to row with Maui Paddle Sports. We met Tara, as well as our guides Jamie and Vie, on the beach and launched our Hawaiian canoe into the ocean. We rowed to the Turtle Cleaning Station where Jamie and Vie explained how the turtles come to this area to be cleaned by the fish. And there were turtles all around our canoe and the guides knew each and every one of the, including gender and age. It was very cool! We rowed what seemed like another 10 miles (not really, but my arms and shoulders were already sore from paddling the day before), but we were completely entranced by Jamie’s cultural and historical information he shared with us about Hawaii. It really is a fascinating world here, and I love that they manage to maintain their heritage, beliefs and love of the land and sea.

After brunch at The Plantation House where I devoured every bit of my Cajun Ahi Benedict, we called it an afternoon and headed in for some R&R. That afternoon, we met up with Tara to say goodbye and spend my last Maui evening aboard the Trilogy for a Sunset Sail. Many thanks to the Captain, Caleb and Jordan for a beautiful afternoon at sea with great PuPu’s, cocktails and entertainment (Jordan sings and plays the ukulele). This was the perfect way to end the trip....with old and new friends on The Valley Isle.

As they say in Hawaii, “O ke aloha ke kuleana o kahi malihini,” which means “love is the host in strange lands.” I certainly felt the love during my stay in Maui, and I cannot wait to return. Mahalo!

Girls Getaway to Maui - Day 3 Surf's Up

The next morning was an early one as we met Tara Angioletti, owner of Girls Gone Surfing, at 7AM. Within just a few minutes of meeting her, you realize this tiny, energetic woman will have you in the water and standing on a board before you realize what happened. And that’s exactly what she did. We had a brief overview on land, then it was time to paddle out and catch some waves. Either Tara is a great teacher or I am a fairly quick learner (probably the former), but I was able to stand up on my second try. Once I was up, I was hooked and didn’t want to come in. Tara was a sport and stayed in the water with me for almost three hours. Tatianna wore herself out catching her own waves and called it a day. After exiting the water, I am not sure if I should be proud or disappointed of the cuts and scrapes all over my feet. After all, a true athlete must have proof of their hard work, right?

After working up an appetite, we went for breakfast at the Sea House Restaurant at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. With options like the Homemade Macadamia Cinnamon Roll and the Molokai Sweet Potato Egg Frittata, the choice was difficult. I ended up trying the Loco Moco Country Style, which is the classic local style breakfast with a twist. Yum!

After breakfast and a few minutes laying out at Slaughterhouse Beach, we met up with Tara for some cliff diving (or at least jumping). The worst part about the jumping was climbing the rocks barefoot after we tore up our feet earlier that morning surfing. Once we jumped, we were hooked. Thanks Tara for two awesome experiences in one day!

Girls Getaway to Maui - Day 2

The next morning I drove to Wailea to the Fairmont Kea Lani for some beach time and paddle boarding. The resort is beautiful, and the paddle boarding was the best ever as I could see blue fish swimming next to me and was joined by a very friendly sea turtle. For lunch, I returned to Paia where I was determined to dine at the Paia Fish Market, despite its always packed dining area. I ordered the very popular “Obama Burger,” which is fully equipped with Cajun seasoning and wasabi butter on top of white fish.

That evening, Tatianna and I were excited to experience the Old Lahaina Luau, which is considered by everyone the best luau on the island. We were greeted by Kawika who was our host for the evening. As we entered, we received our lei and quickly picked up a few Mai Tais to start the evening. Kawika gave us the grand tour prior to the general public arriving. Along the waterfront were authentic Hawaiian artisans featuring everything from basket weaving to wood carving to lei making. We even got our very own hula lesson, and an overview of the Imu Pit where they cook the pig for the evening’s feast. I was somewhat confused as Kawika showed us a bunch of dirt and said that’s where the pig is. I quickly realized that the pig was buried under the dirt and was cooking, a 12-hour process.

After the pig was unearthed, dinner was served. We feasted on traditional luau fare, such as Poi, Pulehu Steak and Ahi Poke. I especially loved the Chicken Long Rice, which looked like clear gummy noodles. It was delicious! After dinner, the show began with a tribute to the compelling tradition of the pahu (drum) with the Ote’a, the famous and festive drum dance of Tahiti. Afterwards, the ancient hula and modern hula were featured and each one told a story, as all hulas do. It is a beautiful display of Hawaii’s most popular performing arts with lovely movements, colorful costumes and an authentic feel of the island’s history. Mahalo to Kawika and the fantastic staff at Old Lahaina Luau..this was one terrific evening!

Girls Getaway to Maui - Day 1

I am one lucky girl to have a friend who moved to Maui and invited me to come visit her. Tatianna and I met a few years ago during a Girls Getaway to Montana. At the time, she lived in Phoenix. We stayed in touch over the years, and when she moved to Maui she called me to say, “you have to come visit and we have to write the Girls Getaway Guide to Maui.”

As soon as I could, I said “Aloha” to her in person at the Kahului Airport. We traveled 45 minutes from the airport to her town of Lahaina, which is a quaint little town on Maui’s leeward coast that is full of sites, shops, restaurants and art galleries (which is where Tatianna works).

We woke up the first morning ready for our day of hiking with Wade Holmes of No Ka Oi Adventures. Wade specializes in private tours of Maui’s most beautiful places, some well known and others hidden treasures. We were very impressed with Wade’s vast knowledge of the biodiversity and history here and how the two are very intertwined. As Tatianna said, “Wade is a walking encyclopedia.” He truly made our hikes that much more interesting and entertaining. First, we hiked Iao Valley State Park, which features the Iao Needle and beautiful natural landscapes and waterfalls. After this hike, we traveled to Wade’s secret spot (reserved only for his favorite clients). After hiking down the mountain and down the roots of an enormous Banyan Tree, we arrived at the perfect picnic spot nestled perfectly next to a beautiful waterfall. Wade really knows how treat his guests as he came fully prepared with guava juice and Cacao Goji Maca Nut Balls from Living Foods Maui. This was the perfect!

After about 30 minutes of R&R, we regretfully packed up and hiked back up the mountain and headed to the town of Paia. I immediately fell in love with Paia as it features several quaint shops, such as Alice in Hulaland, and restaurants that were all within walking distance of the public parking area. We dined at Cafe Des Amis, which features both French and Indian cuisine. My Italian crepe was delicious, and Tatianna loved her Shrimp Curry.

After taking a much-needed shower and watching the sunset from Tatianna’s oceanfront balcony, I met up with her in Downtown Lahaina at the art gallery she manages, Kush Fine Art. We strolled down Front Street, which is very reminiscent of Duval Street in Key West, and stopped for some Ahi Poke Tuna for dinner.

With the summer here, everyone’s is gearing up for the big travel season. To keep you and your loved ones healthy on the road, here are some insider’s travel secrets from The Getaway Girl® to keep you in tip top shape during your own getaway.

Diet

• Eat several small meals during the day versus just a few large, heavy meals.

• Pack healthy snacks (veggies, almonds, fruit); avoid fast food.

• Stay hydrated; drink lots of water (add lemon or flavored mixes if it helps increase your water intake).

• Ask for salad dressings, heavy sauces, etc on the side and use them as dips.

• I ask for no bread and/or croutons. Those carbs add up, especially when you are on vacation.

• Don’t forget fiber-rich foods. Traveling is one of the worst culprits for digestive problems.

Fitness

• If your hotel doesn’t have a workout room, don’t use that as an excuse. In your hotel room, water bottles can serve as hand weights, towels can help you stretch better, and you can do squats while watching TV.

• Hotel rooms and hallways are great places to do walking lunges.

• Use stairs (versus the elevator) as much as possible.

• Ask for restaurants and attractions you can walk to/from the hotel. This gives you the opportunity to walk off your meal after you have eaten.

• Whether traveling by car, train or plane, be sure you get up and walk around to stretch your legs and keep circulation active.

Cold Prevention

• Wash your hands frequently.

• Bring (and use) hand sanitizer.

• Bring tissues - if you do get a cold, this will help protect those around you.

• Maintain a diet with lots of antioxidant-rich foods to boost your immune system around and during your time of travel.

• Use popular remedies to try to prevent illness such as vitamin C, echinacea, and zinc.

• The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends getting a flu vaccine prior to travel as an important way to protect yourself and others from the flu virus.

The next day we shopped at Bridgeport Village during the day, then headed downtown for cocktails at Departure (it has a great rooftop bar) followed by dinner at Deschutes Brewery & Public House for some home brewed Portland beer. In addition to the beer, I had to try the Root Beer Braised Pork Belly....AMAZING!!!

Although it was a quick trip to the City of Roses, we had a terrific time, laughed and made more great gal pal/cousin memories that will last forever.

Girls Getaway to Portland - Roses & Chelsea Handler

The next day started with a picnic brunch in the International Rose Test Garden, which overlooks the city. After we ate, we took a Roses Gone Wild tour, which is a guided walking tour of the garden. Although Kelly had toured the garden before, she raved about the tour and how much more she learned with the guide. The roses here are amazing and come in every color imaginable, except blue. To find out why there are no blue roses, you will have to take the tour.

Before the Chelsea Handler show, we stopped for appetizers at the Oswego Lake House, which provides great views of Lake Oswego. Then we were headed to see Chelsea Handler, my favorite comedian, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Although Kelly wasn’t a huge fan of Chelsea, she was by the time we left. We bought her new book, Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me, got her to sign them and were thrilled with a fun night out (despite the Big Escape from the venue...way to go Kelly). The Schnitzer will never be the same.....we laughed the whole way home.

Girls Getaway to Playa del Carmen - Day 3

On Saturday morning Roger drove us to Xel-Ha for a day at the park. Xel-Ha is a nature water park that far exceeded our expectations. Like the resort, Xel Ha is all inclusive, so you don’t have to pay extra for lockers, rafting tubes, snorkel gear, food, beverages or alcoholic drinks. With our guide, Sergio, we spent the entire day there and loved the natural cenotes, cliff diving, river tubing, snorkeling, ziplining, snuba, beach, Mayan Cave, as well as nature trail exploration. Visitors can also swim with dolphins and manatees here, and there’s a kid’s playground, shopping and a spa (which we indulged). Xel-Há has not only excelled as a water park at the highest international standards, but constantly strives to maintain its philosophy of appreciating nature, which has been proven by the numerous ecological awards received. As we left, all of the hanging hammocks were occupied with visitors on siesta....looked amazing! Thank you Sergio and Xel-Ha for a wonderful time!

Our last dinner at Grand Velas Riviera Maya was at their signature restaurants, Cocina de Autor, which was recently named one of the “100 Best New Food & Drink Experiences” in the world by Food & Wine magazine. This Spanish restaurant features a world-class menu created by internationally acclaimed Spanish chefs Bruno Oteiza and Mikel Alonso. Each day at Cocina de Autor brings new choices in Spanish haute cuisine when Chefs Oteiza and Alonso present their signature, gourmet Spanish Basque dishes in the a la carte menu of specialties. Incredible dishes range from Light and Refreshing Lobster Salad, Venison in Love, Fresh Fish with Wild Mushrooms, and Veal Chops Roasted for 36 Hours. Quince, Cheese and Pecan Cigars and Chocolate with Honeycomb Wax are just a taste of what’s in store to complete your meal. We ordered the Tasting Menu with Wine Pairing and were blown away. Each time they brought a new course, it trumped the last one. Three of the notables were: a gazpacho ball (yes, somehow they got gazpacho inside a ball), mango souffle with a gin and tonic foam and the beef dish that was moving and waving to us (watch this video to see). This is by far one of the best dining experiences of my life!

Girls Getaway to Playa del Carmen - Day 2

The next morning we woke up to some sad news from home. As we made our way to Azul (restaurant for breakfast), the smiling and friendly staff lifted our spirits as they wished up good morning. We made our way to Azul and were completely impressed by the breakfast buffet served here. If you couldn’t find something fabulous to eat here, you weren’t hungry. Just the juice selection alone was not only delicious but also very pretty. I ordered a Bloody Mary, and they wheeled out an entire cart full of booze....perfecto!

After breakfast we joined Anna Marie for a tour of the property, which included a visit to the Ambassador with its piano bar, karaoke bar, pool, boutique and restaurants; the Master with its restaurants, spa, convention space, jungle area, pool and boutiques; and the our own Grand Class that also has its own boutique, pool with swim up bar and restaurants.

After the tour, we made our way to the swim up bar for some much-needed cocktails. After we informed Oscar that we were grieving from our sad news from back home, he insisted we do tequila shots. After we finally gave in, he informed us we needed to do them while laying on the bar. We finally agreed, and the tequila helped ease our sadness. We laid out by the pool with our frozen cocktails, enjoyed the pool area and ordered a perfect lunch of fish ceviche, salad and grilled vegetables. The best “pool food” I have ever had!

After lunch we were transported to the award-winning spa (located at the Master location) by the resort’s on-property shuttle service. We arrived 90 minutes before our spa treatment appointments in order to experience the spa’s Water Journey. This terrific water experience starts with a sauna and steam room session, followed by time in the “ice room.” After going from very hot to very cold, we were sent to the clay room for some skin and hair therapy. After this, we went to the hot and cold wading pools, then on to the big pool for water massage therapy. This was super cool. Did we have to leave???? Yes, but the fact that we were leaving our water journey for massages made it a little easier. As someone who gets massaged a lot all over the world, I can easily sa this was definitely in the top 10 of massages! Thank you Grand Velas Riviera Maya!

Dinner that evening was at Frida, the resort’s Mexican restaurant. Grand Velas Riviera Maya celebrates the legacy of the famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo at this restaurant that offers Mexican cuisine with a modern twist. Each dish is itself a masterpiece that reflects the rich culinary heritage of Mexico with a menu that features grilled flank fillet with roasted cactus leaves and Chipotle chili pepper stuffed with cheese, red snapper fillet in zucchini flower sauce with corn mushrooms, and grilled portobello mushrooms and endives covered with Guajillo chili pepper cream. Desserts are equally impressive with options such as tres leches cake with caramel sauce, Mexican chocolate mousse, or homemade sorbet.

When I got the invite to visit the Grand Velas All Suite & Spa Resort, Riviera Maya in May and an offer to bring someone, I asked my mom if she’d like to take a Mother’s Day trip with me to Mexico’s Playa del Carmen. She immediately said yes!

It took us less than two hours to get from Orlando to Cancun (thanks Jetblue). We arrived at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya and were incredibly impressed with the entrance to the resort, which made an understated statement with its white walls, turquoise water and white sandy beach in lieu of landscaping. The wooden doors slowly rolled open and we drove onto the property. I immediately felt a sense of relaxation as we meandered along the driveway and through the lush, green natural vegetation. We learned there are three hotels on the property: Grand Class (adult only oceanfront), Ambassador (family oceanfront) and Master (family/convention located in the jungle). Roger, our driver, took us to the Grand Class, which would be our home for the next several days.

We were so excited to be there and the gorgeous beach lured us straight to the water where we napped on the beachside beds. Although we were completely relaxed, we were getting hungry. The Grand Velas Riviera Maya works with acclaimed chefs from around the world, including Spain, France and Mexico, so we were looking forward to our dining experience here. All of this in an all-inclusive resort (yes, all food, drinks and alcoholic beverages are included)!

We headed to our first dinner at Grand Velas Riviera Maya’s Piaf, one of the resort’s eight on-site restaurants. Piaf is the French themed restaurant with an impressive gourmet menu created by the acclaimed French chef Michel Mustiere. Gourmet specialties include Chateaubriand, lamb filet with thyme sauce and ratatouille, sole meuniere, traditional French onion soup, and delectable desserts. We started with martinis, then ordered the tasting menu with wine pairings. Our taste buds had one awesome adventure with each course being better than the next. We quickly found out that the food tastes as good as it looks, and the presentation is incredible.

While reading the May 2011 issue of Woman’s Day Magazine’s article on Girlfriend Getaways, you may see a name you recognize. Casey Wohl, known as The Getaway Girl®, is a Central Florida-based TV and radio travel correspondent, as well as author of the Girls Getaway Guide: Leave Your Baggage at Home® travel book series.

The article highlights the importance of Girlfriend Getaways, why women need them, ways to plan them and how to not feel guilty about enjoying them. Wohl was interviewed by the magazine in January the day after she returned from her own Girlfriend Getaway to London and Dublin. The article begins with Wohl’s unique story of personal and professional heartache and how Girlfriend Getaways helped her cope with the most difficult time in her life.

“After a divorce and getting fired from my job, I was depressed and felt like a complete failure,” Wohl said. “Within a few months, I went from married with a great job to single with no job and no income. It was a very difficult time for me and traveling was my therapy.”

Girls Getaway to Panama City, Panama - The Donald

My last stop in Panama City was to the Trump Ocean Club, which is expected to open in July 2011. It is a 72-story building that is a combination of residences (92% are sold) and 369 hotel guest rooms located on the Punta Pacifica peninsula with boutiques, restaurants and a casino located below. The property is amazing. I cannot wait to see it when it is completed.

Girls Getaway to Panama City, Panama - Old World Meets New

The next day we visited Panama Viejo, or Old City. The Panama Viejo Historic Monumental Complex, and specifically the Tower of the Cathedral, is one of the main symbols of the nation. The Old City was the center of expeditions during the Spanish conquest and colonization, as much as the central point in the trade routes of the times. Today, the Archeological Site is one of the most important offerings of the historical-cultural tourism of the country. Since July 2003, the Archeological Site of Panama Viejo has become part of the World Heritage list of UNESCO. To add stark contrast to the morning, our next stop was the MultiPlaza Mall that carries every major luxury brand you can imagine from Tiffany & Co. to Dolce & Gabbana to several non-U.S. brands. I made one purchase in the Felix B. Maduro Department store and had to get out of there as my credit card was already feeling some purchasing pressure.

After my shopping spree, we drove to the Intercontinental Playa Bonita Resort & Spa, which is located on the Pacific Ocean side of the country. The resort is absolutely beautiful and caters to large groups with its various pools, watersports, and sandy beach. We enjoyed oceanfront lunch and I found a beachside canopy bed so I could soak up some Panama sunshine. Please note: I am a trained professional....do not try this at home ;)!

Dinner that night was at Luna Restaurante, which served contemporary cuisine with indoor and outdoor seating and a fabulous atmosphere and menu. I became an instant fan once I learned they had La Crema wine available. But the food was just as good as the wine, and we were not disappointed with high marks for the steak, fish and pork.

Girls Getaway to Panama City, Panama - Monkey Business

The next morning we drove to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort for the tour of Monkey Island. I was looking forward to seeing the monkeys, but thought we’d be far away and they would look like black specks to the naked eye. I was surprised to find out that we could park our boat under certain trees on various islands and the monkeys were right above us. In fact, we got so close to one group of Capuchin monkeys that one jumped onto our boat and stole someone’s bread. Upon hearing the “thud” and realizing the monkey was on the boat, I had flashbacks of the women whose face was mutilated by a monkey and I moved to the back of the boat. But everyone was pleased to find out that the monkey only wanted the bread and then quickly darted off the boat.

We enjoyed lunch on the Causeway Amador, which are three man-made islands that were created from fill dredged from the Panama Canal. The islands are each quite different in what they have to offer visitors: Flamenco has marina with restaurant and discotec; Perico has stores, cafes, boutiques, bars; Naos home of Mi Ranchito Restaurant that also features a bar and hotel. In addition to the current activities offered on the Causeway, building is underway for a Frank Gehry-designed museum on some land before you arrive on the islands.

After lunch we went to the Handicraft Center, which is located behind the YMCA, that sells all kinds of souvenirs, hand crafts, and clothing made by Panamanians. I was looking for a genuine Panama Hat, but was surprised to find out they are actually made in Ecuador and ranged in price from $25-$120 depending on quality...who knew? But I got a lesson on how to spot a genuine Panama Hat and was thrilled with my new purchase.

With my “Purchase Genuine Panama Hat” checked off my To Do List, we headed to Casco Antiguo, or Old Quarter, which is a part of town where the city was relocated to in 1671 after an attack by English pirate Henry Morgan. The move of the city to a more appropriate place in terms of defense was carried out and the Old City was left behind. The look and feel of this area is reminiscent of the French Quarter in New Orleans with beautiful architecture and various town squares with statues in the middle. This is also where the President of Panama lives with three white herons that also reside in his “White House.” You can find merchants selling art and crafts in many areas in this part of town, which added some shopping time to my cultural exploration.

I arrived at the Tocumen Airport in Panama City and was transferred to my hotel for the next three nights, the Riu Hotel Plaza Panama. After checking in and dropping my luggage off, we headed to lunch at Miraflores Restaurant and visited Miraflores Visitor Center. The Panama Canal is a lock-type canal, approximately 50 miles long, that unites the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans at one of the narrowest points of the Isthmus of Panama and the American Continent. The Canal officially opened its doors to international trade in 1914, and since then, more than 1 million vessels have traveled the waterway. The Canal’s three locks, each of which have two lanes, operate as water lifts to elevate ships 85 feet above sea level to the level of Lake Gatun during their transit through the Canal, and then lower them back to sea level. A project to widen and deepen the Canal is currently underway. The new locks will be 1,400 feet long and 182 feet wide, the size of four football fields. About 10,000 people work for the Panama Canal Authority, and ships pay anywhere from $50,000-$300,000+ to pass through the Canal.

That evening we were excited to attend an outdoor Shakira concert at the Figali Convention Center. I was escorted to the front, next to the stage as credentialed media were allowed to stand at the stage for the first three songs. Shakira unexpectedly started the concert from the crowd as she walked around the stage on the ground right in front of us. I have seen her perform on television, which is very different versus standing under her as she gyrates those hips with moves that could turn a gay guy straight. She is amazing, talented, beautiful and super flexible (at least in the hip area). The Figali Center is home to regular concerts featuring acts such as Journey, Ozzy Osbourne and Andrea Bocelli.
