We started in the mangroves (back country) fishing for young tarpon onthe Atlantic Ocean side. After chasing a few schools of these fish, we finally got hooked on one. It was very cool to see how acrobatic these fish are as they jump into the air and fight hard against the line. It was my first tarpon, and it was a whole lot of fun!
Later that day, we drove to the Gulf of Mexico for some shark fishing....that's right SHARK fishing! I was VERY excited about this, since I've never done anything like it before. Once the bait and chum were out, we started seeing sharks swim all around the boat but none we biting. After almost an hour in that spot, we started packing up and calling in a day. Just as we were about to pull the lines in from the water, we heard the sharp buzzing sound that anglers like to hear. We had a fish on the line and he was pulling away. We jumped up and grabbed the rod, and I started reeling. After about a 10-15 minute fight, my 100 lb nurse shark was within our sights. Once close enough to the boat, we took some photos and released the fish. What a day! The actual show will air on Keys TV Channel 5 in a few weeks.
Many thanks to Reelin in the Keys Capt. Host Matt Bellinger & Producer Fernando Barta, as well as Capt. Scott Meyer from the Saltwater Experience. What a great crew. I cannot wait to go out again.
